  • What are genetic tests and how are they used?
    Genetic tests are designed to test the DNA that exists in the cells in your body. It can be used to identify increased risks of certain health problems, help you choose treatments, or help determine your response to certain treatments.
  • Will I be able to understand the results?
    Home Genetics provides reports with clear results and descriptions of what the results may mean. However, it is recommended that you share the report with your doctor so they can fully interpret your results and can guide you if health decisions need to be made.
  • Why would I consider sharing the results with other family members?
    Sharing results with family members can help them understand if they may be at risk for certain diseases as well. Your hereditary risk will not be the same as theirs, so it is advised for them to complete a genetic test too.
  • Will my genetic test results affect my insurance or my employment?
    No. A law passed in 2008 protects United States citizens from discrimination based on their genetic information. This applies to both health insurance and employment. For more information about this law, visit GinaHelp.
  • Are my test results confidential?
    Yes. Your test results are exclusive to you and your doctor and are to be used for clinical, diagnostic and treatment purposes only. Your results will not be shared with your insurance, employer or other legal or administrative entities.
  • I’ve heard about DNA testing scams in the news. How is this different?
    Genetic testing is a relatively new and exciting field that can provide a wealth of important information for you to live a longer, healthier life. Unfortunately, there are people who have used this field as a cover to steal the identities of unsuspecting victims. Home Genetics is a trusted and registered U.S. based business with thousands of satisfied customers. We are required to stay in compliance with CMS and OIG guidelines and adhere to all HIPAA genetic screening regulations.
  • How is genetic testing is performed at your laboratory?
    Our Colorado based laboratory uses special genetic testing equipment to analyze patient samples and produce test results and reports. We have physicians on staff to help patients obtain the test prescriptions they need. While our laboratory staff handles the sample collection, interpretation, reporting, and patient/physician access for test results.
  • What if I mess up my sample collection?
    If you follow the instructions before performing the collection, you will be fine. However, if the unexpected happens and your sample is contaminated, just give us a call and we’ll send you a new sample collection kit.
  • Do I have to mail the sample back right away?
    Yes. If you delay mailing the sample by more than XX days after you collect your sample, it may affect the results of your test.
